This happens when our automatic reactions cause us to do things that keep us safe, but also keep us from moving forward.


Though we need our survival mode to help us make it through life, it can set you back when it's always running the show.

But you can be free from constant survival. You simply need to work with your body and nervous system in a way it can understand.

Here’s an example:


How many times have you tried productivity "hacks”, mindset work, personality-based assessments, and habit tips... only to find they don’t stick for very long?


There’s a major reason for this. And it's why conventional self-help and coaching don't work long term:


They only focus on your mind to get you to take action, and neglect working with the most important part: your nervous system.


Here's the challenge: your nervous system is your body's home security system - which is great when it protects you from big threats like burglars or fires. But imagine your alarms going off every time something as harmless as the mailman walking by happens... you'd never get anything done!


Even the good things you want can set off your alarms because you don't yet feel safe to go after them. And this is why it's so important to learn to regulate and stretch your capacity for change and uncertainty, so you can take courageous action.


Many coaches are unaware of this then go straight to strategies and solutions, but this doesn't create lasting change.


You see, your patterns and behaviors are formed by your experiences early in life.


To rewire years of patterns means getting to the core. And I don't mean just learning why you're stuck, but actually building the skills and resources you need to get and stay unstuck.


In my 15-year corporate career in technology and design, and as a self-employed designer, artist and coach…


I’ve witnessed (and experienced - more on this in a bit) all the ways my teams’ and clients’ survival patterns hold them back, like…

Who is this program for?

This program is for anyone looking for more direction, and actionable ways forward in their purpose, career and overall life. Or if you're not sure what you're looking to work on, you may find this program beneficial if you feel overwhelmed, unmotivated, bored, lost, or stuck. We can design your goals together because nervous system work is so helpful in figuring out the right ones and the right strategies that keep you from being stuck when you're working on them.

Also, professionals and leaders (some of whom have had traumatic histories) who want to advance in their career/business or design a new career entirely have benefited from working together.

When does this program start?

Individual 1:1 coaching calls begin Tuesday, June 28, while content for the program is released every Monday each week. Once you come on board, we'll organize your unique weekly time for you and I to meet together. Your time is your own for us to work together 1:1. Calls typically can be scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

How long do I have the course materials for?

Forever! You'll have access to current course materials and any updates that happen in the future.

How much time do I need to commit to this program per week?

Including the weekly 50-min coaching call, video content, and exercises, this work is about 3-4 hours per week. The content is designed to be as succinct (but informative) as possible to fit into most people's schedules.

I’ve taken other courses before that I didn’t finish. How will this program be different?

Our individual work together each week would allow me to stay close to how your progress with the content and your goals are going, and I'll help you with techniques, insight and accountability along the way. Many programs give you information with little implementation, and many coaches offer powerful sessions but clients could benefit from additional education. My aim is to bridge the gap between the two, helping you better understand your nervous system, along with your mind.

Can I take this program while in therapy or doing other programs?

Absolutely. Coaching works well on its own and is also a great complement to therapy. If you are in a place to do deep work, this program could be an appropriate fit for you.

Who’s behind “Choose Yourself”?

Hi! I’m Karoleen, and I’m a coach, fine artist and independent UX/UI design consultant.


I help complex trauma survivors, professionals and leaders discover and act on their purpose, and regulate their nervous systems so they can create more joy in their life and work.


I’m a certified trauma-informed coach through Moving the Human Spirit and Lumia, and studied with the Polyvagal Institute.


I grew up in Los Angeles, lived in NYC for 10 years, and now work while traveling the world, helping as many people as I can.


I’ve spent over a decade in corporate/healthcare UI/UX design and technology, working in start-ups and McKinsey & Company, among others. Over the last few years, I’ve been happily painting, designing and coaching independently.
